Technology and good cooperation with the Swedish police were crucial in apprehending the car thieves.
A large blue truck turns off at a rest area near the E4. In the cargo hold are two stolen cars worth over 3.5 million SEK. What the driver doesn’t know is that GSGroup’s search team has tracked the car’s position.
Helsingborg, Sweden
– A Porsche of this type is rare, so of course it attracts extra attention,” says Espen Ranvik, CEO of GSGroup, about the car that has now been reported stolen.
Because this is not just any car. It is a fully equipped Porsche 911 GT3 RS, a car worth around 2.5 million SEK. When the owner of the car realized it had been stolen, GSGroup was immediately contacted.
The car is in motion
GSGroup’s search team quickly retrieves the data from the car and activates the tracking device. The device is put in so-called “tracking mode” and the search operation starts. A cat and mouse game, thieves versus technology.
– We receive signals that the car is in motion. More specifically, on the E4 east towards Stockholm, says Klas Wassberg, Sales Manager for Recovery at GSGroup.
After a while, the signals indicate that the car has stopped. The position shows that the truck is in a rest area.
– The search team has always been in close and good communication with the police, which is crucial in such cases. When we are informed that the car is parked, we communicate the coordinates to the police, who quickly arrive, Wassberg continues.
When the police arrive at the scene, they do not see a Porsche, but a large blue truck. Inside the trailer, the driver has tried to hide the contents under a tarpaulin. But the car is there, and more. Because under the tarpaulin is also a RAM 1500 Crew Cab pickup truck, also in the million class. The driver is taken in for questioning.
– It’s a great feeling when our technology and expertise can help our customers recover stolen items. Not only did we find the stolen car, but also an additional car that turned out to be stolen. We would like to commend the police for another good cooperation, says Espen Ranvik.
Håkan Nilsson, sales manager at Porsche Sweden, is also very happy that the car has now been found.
– For several years now, Porsche Sweden has been offering all new car customers installation and a three-year subscription for tracking devices from GSGroup. This in itself probably contributes to the relatively low figures we see when it comes to thefts of newer Porsches, but when, as in this case, a theft still occurs, it is gratifying to see that the technology works and that GSGroup, together with the police, manages to stop the perpetrators.
Ranvik also believes that the cooperation between Porsche and GSGroup is important. Especially when the figures show that the number of search operations is increasing.
– We are seeing an increase in the number of stolen car searches after COVID. It seems that the criminal gangs are trying to compensate for the time when the borders were closed. Good cooperation with the police, car dealers and insurance companies is essential to find as many cars as possible before they leave the country, says Ranvik.
If convicted, the prosecution requests that he be expelled from the country.
The trial has taken place in Nyköping District Court and the verdict will be delivered on Tuesday, August 29.
